2ply Mod Bit is a service offered by Arcamm Roofing, Insulation & Eavestrough within Toronto and surrounding areas.
Modified bitumen or “mod bit” roof material will be sold in rolls and usually applied on flat or low-slope roofs. Its seams will be sealed with a torch to heat the underside of the bituminous substance which coats both sides of a fiberglass or polyester reinforced mat.
Modified bitumen roofs can be installed with one of multiple methods: self-adhered, heat weldable, cold applied, and hot applied.
While Arcamm Roofing considers the material very durable, the manufacturer’s label usually warrants its lifespan for just 10 years.
Generally, modified bitumens utilize asphalt, a traditional waterproofing medium, modified with APP (atactic polypropylene), SBS (styrene butadiene styrene), synthetic rubber or additional agents which develop a uniform matrix enhancing the asphalt’s physical properties. Styrene butadiene styrene and atactic polypropylene are the most typical bitumen modifiers.
MBS — modified bitumen membranes — mix the features of a built-up roof along with the extra tensile strength from its polymer modification. Utilizing a reinforced sheet which is prefabricated inside the plant, modified bitumen systems will require a less labor intensive application, as well as may be applied cross platform within certain residential applications and commercial applications alike.
The modified bitumen roof system is primarily composed of polymer-modified bitumen that is reinforced with one or more fabric plies like fiberglass, polyester, or combination of both. If applied, factory surfacing includes slags, mineral granules, copper or aluminum. The bitumen will determine the physical characteristics of the membrane and offers main waterproofing protection, whereas the reinforcement will add puncture resistance, strength, as well as overall system integrity.
