Choosing a Professional Roofer

The process of redoing your roof can be a daunting task, that's why you need to be able to count on your roofing contractor to help you out.  From what products to use, whether you should use ice and water versus tar paper and even starter strips right down to the colour of  your shingles is just a few examples of what you should expect during your reroofing experience.

That's why Arcamm Roofing & Eavestrough has come up with this blog, to help you out.  The blog is here to help you determine the integrity, reputation and experience of a roofing contractor, as well as the time a roofing contractor spends on ensuring you the customer gets the best roofing system possible.

You worked really hard for your money so why not make sure your investment is properly protected by ensuring that we take the time to go that extra mile.

Take the time to choose your roofing contractor, make sure the company you choose employs Certified Master Shingle Applicators, it doesn't hurt to make sure they carry other credentials such as Ventilation Certified since Ventilation is one of many reasons why a warranty is considered to be void if not done correctly. Other credentials are Velux Certified, Fall Protection Certified and Quality Master Certified to mention a few.

Great contractors take pride in their work, taking the time to discuss with the customer the job in complete detail and not rush the proposal is important.  Showing excitement and pride in their work actually shows the overall involvement whether it be the salesperson or the owner doing the proposal and not just going with the lowest bid.

It's important to ask these questions...

-What is the name of the company, the address, you must ask yourself the validity of the company that is using a P.O. Box as an address.  This will help determine the length of time the business has been around.  Try and find a company that has an address nearby with an office/storefront.  Chances of a contractor being around in the next 5 years drops to 2% according to Canadian statistics.

-Where is the proof of Insurance and WSIB, be AWARE, the home owner could be responsible for any injuries that happen on the homeowners premises.  Not providing a current 60 days or earlier proof of Workers Safety & Insurance Board coverage is NOT valid, keep in mind Canadian & United States laws are different but what isn't, is the responsibility lies on the homeowner to ensure they are covered by looking at the certificate of insurance and WSIB certificate to insure the roofing contractor is up to date.  Roofing Contractors who do not have an up to date account or no insurance is likely to have a quote that is cheaper than the other quotes, other reasons could be the roofer is not a full time roofer or can't afford the premium and doesn't stand behind their work, either way, this is not the way to go.

-Make sure to ask the contractor for license or credentials, any awards, etc, keep in mind a business license is not relevant to a contractor's competence, it's sole purpose is for tax reasons only.

-Ask for referrals, the more the better, ask for ones that are recent and some that are older, a few years would be ideal to see how if any complaints were dealt with in a timely manner if at all.  See if any referrals where the customer had a complaint and how it was handled

-Asking for the length of the warranty, workmanship is very important, keeping in mind that the length is not as important as the intent and ability of the roofer to stand behind his warranty which is best evaluated using the referrals.

-What is the companies track record for resolving customer complaints, Arcamm Roofing & Eavestrough has a location on the internet where customers can do an evaluation of the work performed by Arcamm Roofing & Eavestrough.
